Flood Hero Hope to See Neighborhood Restored

Steven Runkle helped to alert his sleeping neighbors to the rising floodwaters in time for all of them to escape; he even carried one girl to safety through knee-deep rushing water. But he and his wife lost their home and nearly everything in it—at least a $100,000 setback, he figures. The couple has spent the past year rebuilding their house. “You just try to keep a sense of humor,” he says.
